Art Activism & Environmental Art

Photographs can be a way to visually display a message that can be read by many. They can showcase truth in a visual form that can inspire and promote positive change from the viewer. Ansel Adams is a great example of an influential photographer, as his photographs led to the creation of a few National Parks.

An artist acts as a communicator of knowledge. They not only communicate information but can also act as “an embodier of hope that transcends the limitations and ‘givens’ of the current social, economic and political situation” and become “the driver of cultural change.” Art creates culture, which in turn forms the way sustainability is approached. Societal structures are constantly evolving with cultural changes, meaning that art has the ability to restructure them. Artists therefore have the power to shift how we approach issues like sustainability and waste management.
